This week’s blog was a tough one for me as it will be the last one that I will be writing for you guys, as I am moving overseas next week! So I wanted to write about something that has really meant something to me over my time here at Fernwood, and what exactly I love about the place! I chose to write about support. In terms of motivation, inspiration and encouragement that we strive to give you here at Fernwood Morayfield. And well, just how important it really is!

Often women can feel like fitness and clean eating can be a competition, especially in today’s society with the use of instagram, facebook and all the different forms of social media. It is a regular occurence that a beautiful, healthy woman can feel inadequate due to others ‘brag factor’ within social media. This feeling is what we strive to avoid! Every woman needs to remember that everyone is different, a diet that works for one person won’t work for another, one persons perfect body is not perfect for another. We want our Fernwood angels to feel as though they are living and feeling THEIR best! Not someone elses best! Look at these women who talk about their success and be proud of what they’ve accompolished, not jealous!

It is surprising just how much some friendly encouragement and support can help somebody. It’s as simple as commenting on a lovely photo of someone on Facebook (who you may think is trying to brag) but just tell them how great they are looking! You’ll feel so much better about it, rather than stewing over your non existent inadequacy.  Or tell them how well they’re going in the gym lately. Or that their hair looks great! And if you’re one that likes to brag (come on we’ve all done it at some stage!) before you post something on social media or say something to somebody, think about how it may make others feel who may not be achieving the exact same results as you. It’s these little things and that little bit of extra thought that add up and make women simply feel happy within themselves. It’s a revolving encouraging circle!

We hope that we help our Fernwood angels become apart of this supportive motion, avoiding the competition and simply encouraging one another! This is why we have introduced things such as the 28 day breakthrough program, to help and support our new members (or existing members), get on the health and fitness bandwagon and truly enjoy it.  We have food coaching programs to discover what eating plans are exactly right for you and personal training to discover what exercises can be used to achieve your own goals.

You belong in a supportive community here at Fernwood.. I’m certainly proud to have been apart of it, you should to!

The weather’s cooling off and it’s becoming much easier to stay in bed for a little longer than necessary, most of us can put it down to the desire to stay snuggled in bed when the weathers a bit dreary, but there may be some underlying reasons why you’re feeling so tired lately! 

Now this may seem strange as being overly stressed is never a good thing! But believe it or not being under stressed also isn’t the best for your fatigue status! You may be too relaxed which is leaving you feeling more tired than necessary. Try stimulate your mind by partaking in an activity that’s out of your regular comfort zone to get you active again!

We all know how important water is, make sure you’re getting enough of it! Lack of water can lead to you feeling sluggish.

Get enough sleep! Seems simple but yet so complex! Your phone/ ipad/ laptop usage before bed can disrupt your sleeping pattern and keeps your mind active much longer than if you were gadget free before bed! Your alarm clock may also be affecting just how sleepy you are throughout the day, the key? Set your alarm clock to the same time EVERY morning.  That sleep in you think you may need- you probably don’t!

And believe it or not, you may be exercising too much! Never thought we would say that did you! You are fine to exercise everyday, but keep your sleeping patterns the same and steer clear of alcohol following your workout to give your body the chance to relax.

You may also be lacking in certain vitamins and minerals, iron in particular can be necessary for combating fatigue.

So get your routine on foxes and hopefully you will be bounding with beans!

Australia Day is upon us! Which means a long weekend woohoo! A time for celebrations and enjoying time with your friends and family, but it can be difficult to keep that New Year clean eating diet up, but we are here to help you with some great Australian, clean recipes!

Having a BBQ? No problem, try out these dishes with your guests and I assure you they will be a hit!

BBQ chicken with mango & cucumber salsa

Serves 4

1 large mango, peeled and cut into 1.5cm cubes

1 telegraph cucumber, cut into 1.5 cm cubes

1 long red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped

½ red onion, finely chopped

½ cup chopped coriander leaves

2 tbsp lime juice

4 x 100-150g chicken breast or thigh pieces

  1. Combine mango, cucumber, chilli, onion and coriander.  Add half the lime jucie and toss to combine.
  2. Preheat the BBQ on medium to high heat.  Combine lime juice and chicken pieces in a bowl.  Season to taste.
  3. Cook chicken for 6-8 minutes per side or until cooked through.

 

Aussie Kangaroo & Macadamia salad

Serves 4

½ tsp lemon myrtle seasoning

2 rosemary sprigs, leaves picked

3 garlic cloves, crushed

1 tblsp macadamia nut oil

2 tblsp Aussie spice blend or BBQ seasoning mix

600g kangaroo loin fillets

4 cups of salad leaves (rocket/spinach/red oak)

1 red onion, thinly slices

1 red capsicum, thinly sliced

1 cucumber, quartered, thinly sliced

1/3 cup roasted macadmia nuts, broken into small pieces

Dressing:

2 tsp seeded mustard

2 tsp bush honey

2 tblsp white vinegar

1 tblsp macadamia nut oil

  1. Combine lemon myrtle, spice mix, rosemary, garlic and macadamia oil.  Coat the kangaroo fillets and marinate, refrigerated for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  2. Heat BBQ to high.  Add the kangaroo and cook for 2-3 mins each side or until cooked medium rare (or to your liking).  Transfer to a plate and rest, covered with foil for 5 mins to rest.
  3. Meanwhile, whisk the mustard, vinegar and oil in a bowl until combined.
  4. Combine the leaves, onion, capsicum and macadmias.  Slice kangaroo in 1cm slices and arrange on top.  Pour over dressing and serve immediately.

Serve with mango salsa, extra lime wedges and salad leaves.

 

Love a good Australia Day burger? No Problem! Substitute your beef for turkey or chicken. Substitute your bread for pita bread or even Turkish bread. And make your own delicious sauce!

And then comes dessert, pavlova is a yummy option for Aussie Day, and guess what we’ve found a delicious clean recipe!

Cacao Raspberry Pavlova

It all comes down to substitutes. Think about what you’re putting on the table! In terms of snacks, make your own sweet potato chips, kale chips, even beetroot chips! Create your own dips- make a day of it- it can be great fun experimenting!

Most of all enjoy the day with your family and friends and give yourself room for a little bit of indulgence, that’s what holidays are for right?!
